The Joint Action Committee (JAC) on delimitation convened its first meeting in Chennai, where members unanimously adopted a resolution demanding a transparent and inclusive delimitation process with consultations from all stakeholders.
Addressing a press conference, DMK MP Kanimozhi expressed concerns over the lack of transparency and clarity in the proposed delimitation exercise by the Union Government.
“The JAC expressed its deep concern regarding the absence of consultation with various stakeholders. Any delimitation exercise undertaken by the Centre should be transparent and allow political parties, state governments, and stakeholders to deliberate, discuss, and contribute,” she stated.
The resolution also urged an extension of the freeze on parliamentary constituencies based on the 1971 Census population for another 25 years, citing the 42nd, 84th, and 87th Constitutional Amendments, which aimed to protect and incentivize states that effectively implemented population control measures.
Kanimozhi emphasized that various political parties across India have come together in solidarity to advocate for a fair delimitation process.
“This is a historic moment in Indian politics, with an overwhelming response from across the country. Leaders from multiple states, including the Chief Ministers of Kerala, Telangana, and Punjab, along with Karnataka’s Deputy CM and representatives from BJD, Akali Dal, AIMIM, and Kerala Congress, have expressed their support,” she said.
She further stated, “Together, in one voice, we stand to fight for fair delimitation.”
The delimitation meeting, chaired by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, witnessed participation from prominent leaders, including:
- Telangana CM Revanth Reddy
- Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann
- Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan
- Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar
- Odisha Congress President Bhakta Charan Das
- Biju Janata Dal leader Sanjay Kumar Das Burma
Announcing the next steps, Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin confirmed that the next JAC meeting on delimitation will be held in Hyderabad, Telangana.
The resolution marks a significant step in the ongoing debate over fair representation and regional balance in India’s democratic process.
